As used in the present context, the term "closed system", in reference to the present medical device, means that the device, with its gas mask properly secured over a patient's mouth and nose, does not effectively have any opening that It is operative to allow air from the environment to be inhaled.
In this closed system, the mask or other part of the device may, however, include holes that have single-way valves to allow exhaled gases to be expelled from the system.
The medical device In a preferred embodiment, the device comprises a a subset of aerosolization comprising a gas inlet for connection with a first source of heliox gas; b a gas mask that can be held over a patient's mouth and nose; c a secondary gas inlet for connection with a second heliox gas source; and d branched duct means comprising a first inlet port, a second inlet port and an outlet port.
The gas mask comprises an opening for source gas, which is in fluid communication with the outlet port of the branched duct means.
The first inlet port of the branched duct means is in fluid communication with the discharge outlet of the aerosolization subset, and the second inlet port is in fluid communication with the secondary gas inlet.
The medical device is capable of functioning as a closed system to avoid dilution of the aerosol with air from the environment before and during inhalation of the aerosol by the patient.
In one embodiment, the device includes a reserve bag. For example, this can be provided in fluid communication with the second inlet port of the branched duct means.
Generally, if the total heliox flow rate exceeds a patient's peak breath flow rate, then the medical device does not require the use of a reserve bag.
